Data from the first-party TripoSIM 198-country research publication. This is a practical decision study, not a live retail SKU feed, independent competitor comparison, or verified field test.
Some destinations are not comparable markets
A low advertised European data rate cannot be assumed available on a remote Pacific island. Market size, backhaul, local wholesale agreements, island geography and product availability can vary widely. A travel-data seller may list a high starting price because fewer plans are available, but the country-level dataset alone cannot prove the cause. It is safer to report the difference and show where additional field evidence would be required. This study is not a competitor ranking and it makes no claims about local carrier wholesale terms.
Identify the actual quote type
A country record can provide a 1 GB, 5 GB or 10 GB observed price plus a separate “from” value. Those are not automatically interchangeable. The cheapest starting offer may include less data or shorter validity than the other tiers. A remote destination with a high 1 GB price might have a different marginal cost at 10 GB, but only a current SKU list can establish which offer is usable. In particular, do not derive an unlimited-plan purchase cost by multiplying a price-per-GB figure; unlimited fair-use limits require their own analysis.
Selected destination evidence from the dated catalog
| Destination | 1 GB | 5 GB | 10 GB | Listed networks | Daily high speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| French Polynesia | $24.38 | $117.12 | $209.34 | 1 | 1 GB/day |
| New Caledonia | $42.00 | $117.12 | $215.82 | 0 | 1 GB/day |
| Fiji | $3.44 | $17.50 | $30.62 | 1 | 1 GB/day |
| Guam | $4.98 | $25.00 | $44.30 | 2 | 2 GB/day |
| Palau | $15.00 | $40.29 | $74.10 | 0 | 1 GB/day |
Research snapshot only. Prices do not establish any particular SKU’s validity or country coverage; network names are catalog-wide, not guaranteed per plan.
The transport and activation risk
At a remote destination, a failed arrival connection can cause more disruption because alternatives may be limited. Download the arrival address, local transport instructions, contact details and emergency information before you depart. Verify that the handset is compatible and unlocked, and that the provider explains when validity starts. Do not depend on Wi-Fi at an isolated ferry terminal or a small airport. Keep a fallback communication plan and review how to contact support if you cannot connect to the travel-data service.
When a local product may win
Travelers should compare local operator prepaid options, their home carrier’s roaming pass, hotel or vessel Wi-Fi, and travel eSIM retail products when practical. The price of a travel eSIM is only one component of suitability: setup time, language barriers, identification requirements and service availability matter. A local retail SIM can be economical for a long stay, but not all airports or small islands provide convenient purchase and activation. We are commercially affiliated with TripoSIM and do not claim neutrality against those alternatives.
How to use this table
The accompanying rows list the exact snapshot values for several island destinations; missing values are shown as unavailable rather than replaced with invented estimates. Always record the dataset date. If final price, data, validity and inclusion vary at checkout, current SKU terms take precedence. A real island-network study would add verified local operator coverage tests at named locations and measured throughput over different times of day.
Avoid treating a median as a quote
Destination median price-per-GB is an aggregate of catalog entries, not a price at which any individual traveler can necessarily buy a plan. The sample size and plan composition differ by destination. A higher median might reflect a predominance of small or long-validity packages rather than purely higher wholesale mobile costs. For island trips, publish the source date and the number of catalog offers alongside each price. It would be misleading to compare a one-day island product to a 30-day European package merely because both mention 1 GB.
